Types of Scaffolding

What is Scaffolding?

Jumply-scaffolding-solution.jpg

Scaffolding is typically made up of metal or wood, though other materials are used. The word scaffold derives from the Old French “eschafaud”, which means “steps on a ladder”. This stems from the ancient Mongolian tribes who invented mobile wooden towers that allowed them to scale large walls. These mobile towers were then used by Venetian builders following their arrival in the 14th century, hence how modern-day scaffolding came about. Scaffolds are crucial for construction sites as they provide access to hard-to-reach areas and keep workers safe while completing tasks. There are many types scaffolds with different purposes, and this article will explore the most common types.

Single Scaffold

single scaffolding

The first type of scaffold is the basic single scaffold. This is a simple frame that rests on two legs and consists of a platform and guardrails. The single scaffold is ideal for small projects and can be used by one or two people. It is also easy to set up and take down, making it a popular choice for short-term projects.

Double or mason’s scaffold

The double or mason’s scaffold is similar to the single scaffold but has two frames instead of one. This allows two workers to work at the same time, which is why it’s often used for construction projects. The double scaffold is also more stable than the single scaffold, making it a better choice for high-risk tasks.

Cantilever scaffold

The cantilever scaffold, also known as the needle scaffold, is a type of scaffold that projects out from a building. This makes it ideal for reaching large areas that are difficult to access. The cantilever scaffold can be used by one or two people and is easy to set up and take down.

Suspended scaffold

Figure 10 – Suspended or Swinging Scaffolding

The suspended scaffold is another type of scaffold that hangs from the roof or ceiling of a building. It is often used for painting and cleaning tasks as it allows the worker to move freely around the structure. The suspended scaffold can hold up to four workers and is easy to set up and take down.

There are several different types of suspended scaffolding, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The most common type is the single-point suspension system, which uses a single cable or chain to support the platform. This type of system is relatively inexpensive and easy to set up, but it can be unstable if not properly installed.

The two-point suspension system uses a single cable to support the platform, but it has an additional cable that connects both ends of the scaffold. This provides extra support and makes suspended scaffolding safer than other types, as long as the cables are installed correctly. However, it does use more material and require more expensive machinery to install.

A third type of suspension scaffold is the truss system. This uses a metal frame to support the platform, and is therefore more stable than other types of suspended scaffolding. However, it is also more expensive and difficult to install.

Trestle scaffold

The trestle scaffold is another two-legged frame that’s used for construction projects. It is very similar to the single and double scaffolds, but it has no platform and only uses guardrails to keep workers safe. The trestle scaffold can hold up to four workers and is known for being a lightweight option with a sturdy design.

SSPMS scaffold

The steel sectional prefabricated modular system (SSPMS) scaffold is a type of scaffold that is made up of steel sections. These sections are easy to assemble and can be used for both indoor and outdoor projects. The SSPMS scaffold is a strong and stable option that can hold up to eight workers.

Patented scaffold

The patented scaffold is a type of scaffold that has been designed and patented by a specific company. This scaffold is typically made from metal or plastic and is often used for construction projects. The patented scaffold is a sturdy option that can hold up to eight workers.

Kwikstage scaffold

The Kwikstage scaffold is another type of metal scaffold that is popular for construction projects. It is easy to assemble and disassemble, making it a good choice for short-term projects. The Kwikstage scaffold is a stable option that can hold up to eight workers.

Haki scaffold

The Haki scaffold is a type of scaffold that is made from bamboo. It is a lightweight and portable option that is popular for small projects. The Haki scaffold can hold up to two workers and is easy to set up and take down.

Wooden and bamboo scaffolding

Wooden and bamboo scaffolding are two of the oldest and most common types of scaffolding. They are generally made from bamboo, a strong and flexible wood that is resistant to moisture and insects. Bamboo scaffolding is lightweight and easy to set up, making it a popular choice for small projects.

However, bamboo scaffolding is not as sturdy as other types of scaffolding, so it is not suitable for large or high-rise projects. It is also vulnerable to fire, so it is not recommended for use in areas where there is a risk of fire.

Wooden scaffolding is heavier and more expensive than bamboo scaffolding, but it is much more sturdy and can be used for high-rise projects. It is also less vulnerable to fire than bamboo scaffolding. However, it is more difficult to set up and requires more maintenance.

Tube and clip scaffolding

Tube and clip scaffolding is a type of scaffold that uses metal tubes to support the platform. The platform is attached to the tubes using clips, which makes it easy to move or adjust the platform as needed. This type of scaffold is lightweight and easy to set up, making it a popular choice for small projects.

However, tube and clip scaffolding is not as sturdy as other types of scaffolding, so it is not suitable for large or high-rise projects. It is also vulnerable to fire, so it is not recommended for use in areas where there is a risk of fire.

Ringlock scaffolding

Ringlock scaffolding is a type of scaffold that uses metal rings to support the platform. The platform is attached to the rings using bolts or screws, which makes it sturdy and easy to adjust. This type of scaffold is heavy and difficult to set up, but it is very sturdy and can be used for high-rise projects.

Cuplock scaffolding

Cuplock scaffolding is a type of scaffold that uses metal cups to support the platform. The platform is attached to the cups using bolts or screws, which makes it sturdy and easy to adjust. This type of scaffold is heavy and difficult to set up, but it is very sturdy and can be used for high-rise projects.

Tower scaffold

The final type of scaffold is the tower scaffold. This is a large, freestanding scaffold that is used for high-risk tasks. The tower scaffold can hold up to four workers and is easy to set up and take down.

There are many types of scaffolds with different purposes, and this article has explored the basics of common options. A strong scaffold is an important consideration for any project, and workers should always follow safety protocols when working on a temporary structure. If you need advices, please contact Jumply for a Solution!
